Bush uses that phrase to keep people from voicing their opposition to his war and other horrible policies. The truth is the opposite. It is VERY American to voice opinions. Until Bush got into office that is.
Yes, Americans make fun of other nations in our movies. We make fun of ourselves in movies also.

I agree with what extton said about our American movies. But I'd like to also add that since our people COME from all those other countries that we make fun of (including our own), it's yet another form of making fun of ourselves. I've often wondered how non-English speakers in other countries understand humor that is tied to all the "foreign" accents we hear in our country, as I don't know how the contrasting accents are translated in the dubbing process. But of course you speak English, so I suppose that's not an issue for you. However, I do agree with extton that you may not understand that the contrasts of cultures is PART of our culture. Just as I don't understand British humor and their penchant for laughing at people when they're down, perhaps you can accept that you don't fully grasp American humor as portrayed in our movies.
And, by the way, there's lots of crappy American movies, so we're talking about a HUGE range of quality, here. As an American, I can freely say that there is tons of American humor that I can't stand, either, and might find as equally offensive as you do.
As for "Americans" saying that if you don't agree with them it's ANTIAMERICAN - that's an excellent bit of American humor, I suppose. I'm mean, this country is COMPLETELY DIVIDED. We disagree with EACH OTHER! If Bush and his supporters can point to folks like me as being anti-American, then you're taking the accusation WAAAY too seriously. Here, I'll make you feel better: I obviously don't agree with you, and I'm not calling your view anti-American. Feel better? :)
Finally, other countries most definitely attack their own internal critics as unpatriotic. Just look at Turks inside of Turkey who want to talk about the Armenian Genocide and you'll see lots of attacks of them being anti-Turkish!

It is true... Americans do make fun of other cultures and nations. I remember when I came to this country in the very late sixties. Every war movie with Germans in it, portrait us as stupid Nazis. I thought to myself if this is all people know about Germans, then no wonder they asked me if I am a Nazi, or some other stupid question. I was just a youngster then. Being made fun of, yes, plenty of times, for the way I talk, as so I was stupid, made fun of as loosers, for the way we eat with a knife and fork, and on and on. To be honest I had my fill, and I feel for any other country that is being generalized or stereotyped, and being made fun of for being different. There are only two Nations I know of that use the word ANTI in their National Pedigree. Anti-American and Anti-Semite (Israel), for the rest of the world it is OK if we don't agree with every aspect of their Politics. Make yourself a picture, if this isn't funny.

Yes, of course Americans make fun of other nations and their culture in their movies..
But they do the same thing to their own nation with far greater freedom than most nations would allow.

Yes. But keep in mind that americans also make fun of american culture in their movies. I'd say there are a lot more american movies that involve making fun of american things than there are american movies that involve making fun of foreign things.
And that's just part of what american culture is. We feel free to make fun of anyone and anything for any reason, or for no reason at all.

americans, in general, think it is perfectly okay to make fun of every other nation on the planet, but for some reason most of them also hate hearing anybody joke about america. it is entirely hypocritical, and quite honestly it just makes americans look funnier to the rest of the world

No. Occasionally a comedy may make fun of another nation - but that's all in good fun. In a drama I don't think I've ever seen such a thing.

I think every culture makes fun of another culture - they are all being egocentric. Its simply human nature!
On a side note, the best show that makes fun of everyone and everything is 'The Simpsons'. I love it!!!
