This morning, in Holton head Island, North Carolina, my sister was playing in the ocean when something hit her leg. She moved away from it and felt something beginning to crawl up her leg and stick spikes into her legs. She says it was the worst pain she has ever felt in her life. She begin to swat at it when it grabbed ahold of her arm and was now crawling up half of her with extremely long tenticles. She was pulled under and nearly died. She finally shook the creature off and had the poison removed. She is still feeling faint. I have searched and searched and I have found no reports of this happening. What could this be? Does anyone know??? She didn't see it, because it all happened under water.

I will not b a part of the "guessing game", but from Ur description of the incident it could have been a jellyfish.

According 2 the following link there r a many varieties of "jellyfish" that cause different degrees of pain. Some r venomous, some r not They seem 2 hang-out in South Carolina:

There are many that can do that.. Jelly fish are known to do that, squid as well they are just as poisonous as an jelly fish, also puffer fish , sting rays, Octopus.

Hilton Head NC is known for that to happen to people.. I stepped on an puffer fish and was also stung by an sting ray I had an hole in my foot it took about 2 months for it to heal, Make sure she keeps soaking in warm water this will help to ease the pain.

They should have given her pain medicines to take. It will take time for her to start feelling better.Hope she feels better soon.

That really sounds like a man-o-war (big jelly fish). If it felt as if the water was on fire, that's most likely what it was. She was probably not dragged under, most likely fell from the pain. I'm surprised that the doctors who assisted in removing the poison didn't give her some indication of what they thought it was.

Holton Head NC ... is that where you go when you can't make it to Hilton Head SC?

Best guess would be Jelly Fish or Portuguese Man-o-war

Maybe an octopuss, or squid or something.

You said she had the poison removed. Couldn't the doctor give you some idea of what type of animal the poison came from?

Jelly fish. This sounds weird but if she is still hurting make a paste with meat tenderizer for the injured area. I wish her well

There are many sea creatures which are not yet inspected by scientists. This case needs judgment from specialists. If anybody tells you else he will be only guessing.
