this is the answer i gave to another person's same question 10 days ago and i got the best answer for it.........so here it is......

well thats a broad question unless any technichal specifications are their......on the other hand , if try to answer the question without any details....i would suggest either or combination of these are the culprits:
1. slow processor
2. lesser ram as coompared to work you try to do on ur comp(get extra RAM)
3. heavy antivirus running like norton, mcafee, etc(if so try installing AVG free version)
4. bad sectors on hard disk(many cases can arise so contact ur vendor) or highly fragmented hard disk(try defragmenting the disk using windows in built defragmentor, it would be better if you can download a defragmentor software...there are alot on www.download.com)
5. have not formatted ur system for ages..(its better o format atleast ur Os partition time to time)

(Now comes the reasons that are destructive:)
6. viruses have taken over ur system( so most of the ram is eaten by'em.solution: try formatting whole of the system)
7. trojans,adwares,spywares,etc..... try formatting whole of the system)

and their could be many more reasons i could point out but may not help you unless you specify details.....(how can a doctor cure a patient if patient does not specify the details)

The size of your hard drive will not affect the speed of your computer. Try Glenns advice first, but you will probably need to re-install windows and your most important software and it will speed up again. Make sure you back up your importantn files to CD/DVD and follow the instructions carefully.

Next time only install software that you REALLY NEED. Free stuff is always the worst, so if you didn't pay for it, then think twice about putting it on.

Your modem may not be sending a strong signal. Call your cable company and find out if the net is running slow in your area right now. This just happened to me, and it lasted five days, and now today is the first day it's back to normal.

Get your boyfriend to do some fancy stuff with an antivirus and disk cleaner and defragmenter, if no, get a boyfriend, if married then your husband should do something. But if your extremely persistent and your willing to do it by yourself, go to start-programs-accessories-and do the disk defragmenter and also disk clean-up, run your antivirus if you ain't got one, go to softpedia and search for avg antivirus (its free) and you should be ok. If not, get a computer person to take a look at it for you.

Maybe your internet connection is just slow. You could try cleaning out the cookies and temporary internet files. Also, try defragmenting your drives. Hope you didn't get a virus. Do you have anti virus protection?

Hard drive space has nothing to do with speed and performance. Try this: go start>run> type msconfig - then click on the startup tab and uncheck anything you don't need. Do it one by (restart) one to make sure you really don't need it booting up.
