Both Michener (Hawaii) and McCullogh (Thornbirds) and Rutherford (London) wrote a number of books. All of them are interesting. Diana Galbadon is another who writes epic historical novels and is very readable.
It's a fun way to learn history and be entertained at the same time, isn't it?

An older book, but one of the best historical fiction I have ever read and I have read a lot...is Forever Amber....its about a young girl who goes to court during the days of Henry VIII (or thereabouts) and becomes a courtesan and lives thru the plague that kills half of London. It is a great story and you can get it cheap on Amazon or Ebay cause it is an older book....Another good one is The Other Boleyn Girl about the sister of Anne Boleyn wife of Henry VIII and the going ons of the court. Enjoy...

Walter Scott and R.L. Stevenson have written some highly suspenseful historical novels.

I think you'd classify those as historical romances. You might like Jakes "North and South" and "Love and War," as you liked Gone with the Wind. You could also try "Shogun".
