Could be that it's not getting fuel. Assuming you're not out of gas, you could have a bad fuel pump. Or it could be that your air filter is so clogged that it's not getting enough air. Or something is wrong with the spark system - say you had a loose wire to the distributor, etc. Could be a bunch of things. Take off the air filter and check whether there's fuel coming out of the injecters for a start...

Your distributor cap and or rotor could be bad. If so remove the cap and sand the electrical contacts with 120 grit sandpaper. The fuel pump could be shot. (Is your fuel pump A lever pump or is it an electric pump located in the gas tank? Do you have fuel injection or is your car car-berated?) The computer in your car could be faulty. The fuses for any of these things could be blown. (check the fuses both under the dash on the drivers side and under the hood first.) It would be helpful if I knew the make,Model and year of the car. It could also be the timing.Maybe its A clogged fuel pump.
I hope these answers will help even though they may raze more questions. If you ask these questions of your mechanic, It will help you narrow down the problem and it will also save you money on costly and unnecessary diagnostics.
Good luck.
Let me know how things turn out.

i work at a large shop and more often than not its a fuel pump. usually they're in the gas tank. if your car is fuel injected, which most built after 1986 were, you should hear the fuel pump making a high pitched buzzing sound when you first turn the key on. don't turn it all the way to start, just to on. if its working you'll hear in buzzing for about two or three seconds. happened to me right outta the blue.good luck. some of those other answers i read didn't make any sense just to let you know. good luck!

Could be something as simple as the engine is flooded or vapor lock. Last summer when it was super hot, we ran into vapor lock on a number of cars from a mercury mystique to a jaguar xk8 - in those cases letting it sit a while and coming back is the best solution.
Otherwise you may have problems with your distributor. There would be plenty of electricity in the car but it wouldn't get to your spark plugs.

Sounds like you poss have a Bad starter, It is not producing enough spark from the Ignition points to get the engine to crank/turn over...Check your starter, It is not the alternator, that just helps the battery keep its charge...

Probably the starter. Also check your fuel filter and solenoid.
