All grass turns a little pale (and even brown) when it is stressed or when the seasons change. This is normal, and important to allow the grass a time to rest its above ground growth so that it can put energy into a good root system.
So, to answer your question, if the grass is brown, instead of spazzing out, let it rest for a little bit before diving into a cycle of watering and fertilizing.

new sod needs a lot of water. make that A LOT of water. more than you might think. otherwise it's really only a thin plane between the ground and air, and if it's hot where you are, it will dry out. you need to get it rooted and established before you spend a lot of time/money feeding it. water...water...water.

Fertilizer! Use a mulching blade on your mower, it's better for the environment than synthetic fertilizers.
I live in the middle of drought stricken Oklahoma and I haven't watered our lawn all summer and it's a beautiful green. I believe the grass has to learn to be drought resistant.

Keep it shaded. It is drying out. You can also water it more frequently (twice or three times a day).
