I think that's a personal decision.
I had my period for almost two years before I started using tampons at 13. Some girls who are athletically active may find a need at a younger age. Others may wait until after they are much older.
Whenever you feel comfortable trying them, ask your mom to get you a box of Junior absorbency tampons to start off with. Then if you need a heavier one, you can always buy more.
Remember to read the insert for information about using them. Never leave a tampon in for 8+ hours, and use the lightest absorbency you can. You should be changing them every 4-6 hours. If you tend to sleep more than 8 hours, or you like to sleep late on weekends, then keep pads for overnight use.

I got my period when I was 13, and I used pads for maybe two months then switched to tampons because pads bugged me. Do not use pads! It's so gross. You get all sticky and you practically sit in your own blood and you smell worse. With tampons nobody else can tell that you have your period. And you dont have to wait any period to use tampons. The first time you get your period, stick in a tampon. But use regular first, and if your flow is really heavy switch to Super or Super plus.

doesnt matter u can use them the first time u have ur period but they wont be very comfterable at first it took me awhile to get the hang of putting them in perfect so that it felt like i had nothing there it was uncompterable at first but u get used to it pretty fast and it works alot better then wearing a pad all day but when i were them i always wear a panty liner just incase i leak a bit then im covered better be safe then sorry!

i got my period at 13 and started using tampons when i was 16 yrs. a pad was all my mother gave me so thats what i used until i was on my own.my sister once told me that if you use tampons they get stuck inside you and you have to have an op..but obviously thats not true. she was being an ***.
