The easiest way to do it is to use a serrated knife. rub the sharp edge of the knife in the direction you want the cut, or "tear" but don't go all the way through the material. Then you rub it back and forth and scrape away the fabric until the hole and faded thin area you are creating is the size you want it. You also may want to rub the knife in other areas without making holes just to get the worn out faded look. You may want to try on an old pair of jeans and use the directions here. Make them work for you by trial and error.

Rub a razor along the fabric. Try to avoid using scissors though because it doesn't always look natural.

Use a cheese grinder. Probably anything in the kitchen!
