I am not sure what a pet rat would cost you, that depends on where you live, but they usually cost anywhere from $2.50 to $8.00 at pet shops.

Rats really do make great pets- I have two myself (and have had others in the past) including a dumbo rat (they've got large, lower set ears) very cute!

Rats themselves are usually less than $10 and can be bought at most pet stores- although I'd recommend trying to find a breeder in your area. The breeder might charge more, but chances are you'll get a happier, healthier, friendlier, and probably even fancier, pet. Remember that often rats are considered feeder animals, especially at smaller pet stores, so make sure to check and see if there are sick ones in with it. I believe Petsmart only sells them for pets.

It's the cage and startup supplies that will cost the most. An appropriate cage will likely cost you $80-100. Rats like lots of climbing space, they get fairly big too. They're also social, even the males, so make sure to get two and a cage that'll be big enough for both of them. You'll also need a water bottle, food, food bowl, a house/hidey home, bedding (I recommend carefresh or aspen), and a toy or two. I find that many rope bird toys make good rat toys, too. They'd also probably use a hammock (like you can get for ferrets).

Good luck! I hope you enjoy your rats, if you get them :D

Rats are cheap and can be bought at most pet stores, for 3-8 bucks depending on small, med, or large, but u want to make sure that you get atleast two. Rats are very social, so they need a playmate.

You also want to make sure u have a large area for them to run/climb/play-don't stick them in anything plastic or have metal bars that they can slip out of.

The best place to buy them from are rat breeders, If you find a good breeder you should get a good rat, with pet shop rats you dont know what diseases there parents have had and they will most likely get, a decent breeder will only breed from a healthy line that way you will get a good line.

Rats are anywhere between 3 and 8 bux depending on where you buy them. They do need a good sized cage though and various toys (they're BIG time chewers) to keep them busy. Two rats are better than one (if you makre sure they're same sex) unless you have lots of time to play with them.

Good luck, rats make great pets!
