Style or color?

For a traditional look, get a black bow tie.

For something like a prom, match your date's dress color. It's a great look in the photos. You could also try a 4-in-hand, ascot, cravat, or sharpie style that looks more like a regular tie than a bow tie. They can be very modern and fashionable. Check out some styles and colors for ideas here:

"Black tie" is a reference to tuxedos required, not the color of the tie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_tie

If you have a cummerbund or vest, the tie should complement or match it. If it's just a regular red, then go with black. (Red was at one time the standard color for a cummerbund.)

The correct tie for your outfit depends on your event / occasion.
If it is an ultra-formal, or "black tie only" event, then you will wear a plain, black bow-tie. Simple.

If the event calls for a tuxedo, but is "black tie optional," then you can mix things up with the aforementioned silver stripe, a blue bow tie, red....etc. Go wild. Just have a matching cumberbund or vest.

There is also the "european tie," which is really a thin necktie (like a regular necktie). This is commonly worn with a vest, and is never worn with a cumberbund.

Good luck!

Black or Red bow tie if it's for something like a wedding. Or even something in the "wedding colors."

If it's for something like a high school dance, what the heck, get funky and be unique...if the girl you're going with lets you.

with a black tux and white shirt, wear a plain black tie or one that has a single silver strip running diagonal across the middle

is it a TUXEDO or a SUIT? because you can't wear a necktie with a tux, only a bowtie (and of course a black one). if it's a suit, wear a solid black tie; you can't go wrong with that.
