take a look at their role models. they're not striving to be the next condoleeza rice, they're trying to look like britney spears. they get so much bullsh*t shoved down their throats that if they don't look a certain way, they don't fit in....and that's what people that age want...to fit in....

Everyone is so obsessed with weight, because it is embedded in You, at a very young age, and also because You see all those commercials on t.v., zines saying How sexy it is to be Skinny, "ETC" "ETC" and Healthy! I was very skinny, when I was Young, and absolutely Hated it!! I was Self-Conscious, about it, and was embarrased to put on a Swim suit!! I was even Self-Conscious about the Clothes I wore, thinking that People were makeing fun of Me all the time! I really Didn't start putting on weight till I was alot older, and Now that I Did, I now, not only have a weight problem, because I am a little over weight, for My Height, and Weight proportion, but also have a dangerous Cholesterol problem, So. Sometimes You can't win either way!! The best way, for little 13, and 14 Year Olds is to See their Doctors, and find out what they should be weighing in accordance to their Age, Height, and weight proportion. Same goes for Adults.

People obsess over their weight because society tells them that being thin is what makes you healthy. Anyone that doesn't fit that description will be made to feel inferior. It may not be intentional but this is what happens. Look at the commercials, videos, tv programs, and advertisements...how many people of these people portrayed are overweight, short etc?

It is difficult to be anything that does not fit into the most popular images/figures we see on a daily basis. If society wants people to become more comfortable with who they are...start representing the AVERAGE person more on television, videos, magazines etc.

As for sports...they are just as guilty of promoting a specific boby type or weight. Figure skaters, dancers, swimmers, gymnasts etc all need to maintain a low body weight. Soccer players, baseball players etc have to be lean and fit. In University, I remember two football players were criticized for their weight...one had to lose 20 pounds before he could play and the other had to gain 15 before he could play.

So why do we obsess about weight...society tells us to.

I've been skinny my whole life. I eat what I want whenever I want and have a difficult time gaining weight. This is no different for those who want to lose weight. When you are a guy being skinny is not good. Men judge you by size. As a guy I got picked on (during my school years) because they associate skinny with being weak, being girly and gay. I am none of that. Fortunately, I had the mental toughness to see through this vanity. I still was able to have girlfriends and play sports.

Women obsess their looks because society has created this. The media (movie, television, magazines) perpetuates this behavior but only if you let it!

We are all flooded every day with images of 'perfect' bodies and faces. All media all the time. Adds for weight loss, cosmetic surgery, lasic (nix the glasses). Bony Hollywood starlets, and actresses of ALL ages. Anyone over a size zero IS a zero. Most people value only the opinions of others and have never learned self worth. They would rather be and look anorexic than look like an actual person, not a Holocaust survivor. I am so tired of seeing tubercular looking females that words fail me. Treasure yourself - don't overlook your own beauty. If God wanted us to all look alike, She would have made us that way. Be Blessed.

CORAZON MIA:
The only reason there is a lot of obsession with weight amongst young & older women is because of the "standards" of today`s society, look around you every day, everybody wants to be like that "beautyfull" new teen idol, top model, newest singer sensation you name it, I dont know how old you are, how much you weigh, but I know that almost everybody "WANTS TO BE" like somebody else.

Quite frankly it's simple. Your weight determines your future. Not only does it affect your health, it determines what JOBS you will be able to get. It can even determine WHAT YOU GET PAID in those jobs. I guarantee that a skinny person and a fat person in the SAME JOB doing exactly the same work (quantity and quality) will pay the skinny person more money.

our whole culture is obsessed with weight. the diet industry is huge. i mean, walk through a store and every woman's magazine features something about dieting, making your butt smaller, losing 10 pounds in 3 days. walk through barnes and noble and you are bombarded with diet books with all sorts of promises. commercials for jenny craig and weight watchers. and supermodels are unfortunately "role models" with unattainable figures that get airbrushed to an even smaller impossible size to promote products. girls grow up with their mothers and sisters dieting...it seems like the right thing to do, the way to fit in. and women above all are mean to each other about it all. it's like one huge game to see who can be the smallest the prettiest. and we think she who does will have the most love and success. that life will be perfect. it is indeed sad. but we all perpetuate it.
