I think my neice may be an autistic child! Not known for sure! I want to tell my brother he needs to have her tested! But how do I tell him? What are some symptoms of being autism? Should I just tell him, I am not sure what to do?

What is the age of the child? What makes you suspect autism?

Rocking is a classic trait but is pretty common the younger a child is. It can also be a symptom of stress. (example: Parents just got a divorce and the child comforts his insecurity by rocking himself.)

Indifference to eye contact is another classic symptom. I'm not talking about shyness. A shy child will look at you, dart the eyes away, look back to see if you are looking, then dart the eyes away again. The child is very aware & interested, just shy.
An autistic child just doesn't seem to see any point in looking at a face.

The child is often tested for hearing before anything else because he (or she) does not respond when called. But the same child will be very quick to respond to a candy wrapper crinkling.

Does this still sound like your neice? If so?

One idea could be to try to set up a situation where the father can watch her play with several kids her same age. Then you can point out some differences.

If she is in school, you can talk to the teacher (or send an anonymous note) if the father is refusing to consider the idea.

I am the mother of a developementally dissabled child with motor problems. I also took early childhood education. I knew something was wrong at 6 monthes. because her milesstones for growth and abilities were very late.
I do not know how old your niece is. which makes a big difference. or what leads you to believe this. does the child talk. Is he attentive to people when his name is called or listen to you. Does she relate to things other than her own world.
I would not say anything to your brother until you research all you can about autism, When you are very sure. just hand him an aritcle and say ,you are not an expert. But early intervention means more progress for the child as she grows up. it is hard. to hear this. so do not mention anything, unless you know their pediatrician.and can call him or her. and mention something to be on the lookout for. I do not envey you. but in the long run, early diagnosis does make a great difference. and your brother will eventually get over the anger and welcome your help. Hopefully

if you dont know the symptoms for autism, then why do you think she may be autistic?? i suppose autistic children likes to be alone. whatever that may seems pleasant to you may actually make them dislike it. they are the total opposite and are in their own world. tell your brother. if she is really having autism, she needs treatment immediately.

I thik you should write down the symptoms she/he shows, and then research the symptoms of autism.
Some symtoms:
Not responding when spoken to,
Seems, to be "Off in another world", often by herself/himself and doesn't play often with other children....

Those aren't the only symptoms, and don't quote me on those, but do your homework on autism. If it is autism, Your brother needs to know immediately.

Tell him that you are concerned about her, and you know that as a parent he is concerned too, and ask him to have her tested.
