If you are talking about psychological pain (not physical), I have heard it explained that people have a "comfort zone" that they choose. In other words, if they grow up in dysfunctional families, with lots of turmoil, fighting, etc. then they seek out that same environment as adults and will continue to do so as it is "comfortable" in the familiarity, until they learn to change their patterns of behavior.

Just Ducky said it pretty well. People are "trained" to seek pain if they are raised by damaged people who haven't learned to keep their problems away from their kids; these people are "seeking" (manifesting) pain ...all unconscious of course..by making sure it continues in their kids, so the kids likewise grow up to manifest ("seek") it everywhere. Sad.

If happiness is hard to reach at a particular point in someone's life, he or she might reach for the other side of the spectrum, which is pain, as a way of feeling something - anything. A way out of the numbness. And a way to justify your lack of happiness and perpetuate it, if that makes any sense.

peolpe choose pain for many diffrent reasons. I myself choose cutting. sometimes people choose pain as the lesser of two evils ie.. suicide, pain?? othewrs choose to hurt themse;ves because they can handle and treat physical pain better than psychological. i choose it because for me i feel better after i have hurt myself. i guess it stems from years of abuse. there really no right answer to this question. some people choose it and others dont, but everyone has something they do that is not good for them.
