That their little comments like "You can't spell crap without rap" and "rap=retards attempting poetry" are less original than the overly sampled, poorly written rap songs they hate so much? Seriously, there were shirts that said both of those in the 80s...

At least when rappers are talking about the same thing they're up to date (new chains, new cars, new terms and phrases, etc.)...

Also, that rap IS music (in it's best form) and that no matter how much they can't stand it, it's going to be here a while...

Just wondering.

Erica, I'm one of the last people that would ever try to push my musical tastes on someone...and if I were making an effort to do so, it definitely wouldn't be rap...I'd try to convert more people to being Beatles fans...

But that's not the point, I definitely agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. In fact, I think that I might be one of the biggest advocates of free speech and thought that I know...

I just feel that if someone is going to dis something they should do so with a certain degree of originality...

Tuna San, I agree with you that some of the fashions of the rap world are outrageous and uncalled for, but at the same time, look at the whole "emo" movement, I'd never be caught in a tight shirt or girl's pants...Yet, that seems to be another popular image now days...

And does it absolutely have to be a quest to be the alpha male? Can't it just an issue of comfort?

As far as forgetting melody, I'm afraid you're just listening to the wrong artists...

If you're expecting quality rap or Hip Hop from the radio or MTV/BET you're not going to get it...

I can offer plenty of suggestions that will point you in the right directions of Hip Hop with not only intelligent lyrics, but complex melodies and even subtle harmonies. That's if you're interested...

You're probably not.

Ok, here we go again...I doubt that people are actually reading this...Especially the ones that this is directed to...Just in case, here goes...

Vicki, it almost amazes me how much you didn't understand anything that was said in my question...I never said that rap was music in its best form, I don't believe that either...I'm just saying that when rap is at it's highest point (namely Hip Hop) it is indeed music...I do commend you for recognizing that it's only 99% of rap that is terrible and that some songs have meaningful lyrics...But I still think that's an exaggerated percentage, I say it's closer to 95% garbage...

As far as the whole "up to date" thing, you hear rappers making up new terms all the time, if only to stay current...You hardly hear a rapper calling someone a "square" anymore, do you? That's what I mean by up to date...It had nothing to do with other musicians or their styles...Only the people throwing out 20 year old witticisms...

2006-08-26 18:12:32 · update #4

One more thing to Vicki...I'm the last person you need to tell that there are more things to write about than what's going on in the ghetto...The funny thing is, you didn't even show a strong comprehension of my question, so I couldn't expect you to keep up with a song featuring any amount of depth...

Suequek, I like your answer...I'm very happy you know that there is more out there than what you're probably exposed to a million times on a daily basis, and I'm happy that you've personally found a rapper that you like...I just don't know when I ever said that rappers were singers...I'm a rapper and I've done years in chorus and have even had voice training and I still wouldn't dare to say that I could sing...

You're right, poet is a lot more fitting title, yet I still say that "rapper" best describes what we do, which is rap.

Personally I hate rap I cant stand it but I wouldn't say it sucked because its not what I like. I respect everyone's musically preference even though I may not agree with it or like it.

I'm just not into songs that talk about "spinners" or "bling" or whatever the hell those rappers are talking about these days. I'm sure alot of people agree and some disagree. It doesn't matter you shouldn't care what people say about rap, bud, they're just expressing their opinion about that particular genre. I could careless if someone said rock sucked because to me it's the best form of music. Just don't pay any attention to the "can't spell crap without rap" take it as a grain of salt like anything else you read on the internet because that's exactly what it is. It's not scripture and it's not written in stone.

What damages the image of rap?

Well it is simple. First of all it is the damn thumpers, that commit acts of physical audio abuse. So what are these people accomplishing by abusing animals, babies, and those of us whom suffer from migraines? You don’t hear them driving around playing gospel. Secondly it is the gangsta clothing. Honestly wearing a backward hat is in bad taste. Most of the people that do are rude, and disrespectful. Do you know how far I have to drive to get to a mall where I don’t see that? Yes, about 50 miles.

One more note. I was listening to the radio the other day. They were talking about drive-by shootings. The person reading the news made a comment on how they seldom find Motsart CD’s in the vehicles of such people when they are arrested.

So I ask you. Do the police only arrest criminals that listen to rap? Or perhaps there is a much higher number of criminals that listen to rap?

Rap music is the reusing of music that other people have created. Call it sampling or whatever, it's not original work. Sorry. While I hate the latest trend in greasy 20 somethings and their whiney, brooding, rock at least they play their own instruments.

Some guy scratching a record or repeating the hook from an song 20 years old or older while adding their own mindless words is not music. It just preys on the ignorance of the core audience who weren't born when the majority of the songs were written. So, the fans think it's all original and fresh.

I listened to rap in the mid 80s and my parents could identify the songs these guys were using. Flash forward 20 years and I'm able to identify the songs the new generation of rappers are using.

Well as long as you are just wondering, I will explain my point of view. I very much dislike rap. But that is what America is all about, being able to have an opinion.
I will give credit where credit is due though. The lyrics that do not degrade women or promote violence are not so bad. But those have gotten few and far in between. I do like a lot of LL Cool J's stuff.
Lets be honest, some people can rap but they can not sing a note! I do not consider those actual musicians. I think a better term may be poets. There is a differnence between speeking and singing. Sorry.

LOL... Look at the girl with the Slipknot shirt saying that rap shouldn't be considered music! I think rap sounds a lot better than mallcore bands like Slipknot and I barely listen to rap and hip hop.

I think that people are going to be people. Not everybody is going to like Rap. Not everybody likes Country or Rock or that bull sh!t Heavy Metal. But the fact is everybody can't like the same thing. That is what makes people special, the fact that we are all different in one way or another. Sometimes people go a little far in saying that Rap is not music because it is. Now days rap and hip hop are probably the most popular form of music. A lot of different races are liking it, white, black, latino. But I think that people should be entitled to their own opinion about whatever. You can't force somebody to like rap.

As soon as I forget about melody, I guess I could start to appreciate rap.

But why do they have to wear those big *** baggy clothes? Are they trying to look bigger and tougher? That is so pre-homosapien. I thought only apes try to look bigger to prevent other apes from messin with them. Maybe they should dress more like the symphony orchestra dudes and people might start to take them seriously.

I feel you. not every body is gonna like the same music. but it doesnt give you a right to insult people who do. i am an aspiring r and b singer and when people call my porfeesion crap i get pissed. listen before you put it down and if you still dont like i understand. i respect that some people dont like rap, hip- hop, and r and b, but dont put the people down who makes a living out of. its some people's passion. so i understand you

Lee, I've tallied the Answerers votes so far.....and guess what: rap IS LOSING......badly.

Rap is dying: CD sales show it...and evidently, it's being voiced loudly here in this forum which I believe represents a cross-sective core of music audiences PLANET-WIDE.

I know of such things--and I'm telling you: Rap CD sales and concert gross profits are SHRINKING.....the fans have spoken--and they are saying they're TIRED of the same cranked out crap.

So they're right: Rap IS Crap.....without the letter "c", Lee.

rap is not music! its a beat and rhythm with spoken words! so i dont see how it can be it's best form...and even if it was music, which it's not, it definately is not the best form of music or close to

and 99% of the time the things they are "speaking" about is **** like the hoes they had over the night before and the drugs they had to deal to buy there bling

yes i realize there is rap that actually is meaningful, and i respect some of it

but the majority of the time it's the kind of **** i mentioned above

and what do you mean by up to date?
who says music needs to be up to date?
and who says it isnt?
you know it is possible to write about stuff besides what happens in the ghetto
