3 2/3 + 1 1/4 = x

Convert the fractions so that they both have the denominator twelve.
3 + [2/3 (4/4)] + 1 + [1/4 (3/3)] = x

3 8/12 + 1 3/12 = x

Add whole numbers to fraction.
44/12 + 15/12 = x

Use addition.
59/12 = x

Re-simplify.
5 11/12 = x
