He had been on lithium for 14 yrs and it was causing him physical problems. A psychiatrist put him on another mood stabilizer but I can't remember what it is. It's only 2 mg. He was on a whopping dose of lithium. I was very concerned because after I visited he has many symptoms of manic and similar behaviors of the last time it happened. I discussed this with his wife but she just thinks it's no sleep, stress of job. What should I do?

Keep an eye on him. Lithium and changes on meds can create havoc with people. We left my sister in a manic state for a few days and she ended up hallucinating and ending up in hospital. Keep asking the wife if you can. Try talking to your own doctor for advice. I know this is a hard situation. You can't really force a person to do anything they don't want to but is it possible for you to suggest that your son speak to his doctor just to be on the safe side. Good luck. I know how hard it is to deal with this situation.. but take care of yourself first and then your son.

when i was first diagnosed with bipolar, my manic state was way up high that my psychiatrist had me more on downers. i became catatonic and in slow motion. it was very embarrassing. after two weeks, my doctor lessened the dose, and on.

be watchful on your son. it's very stressful on your part, i know. but you have to bear with him.

lithium can be damaging to the kidneys. he must have a lot of water intake.

you may want to go to yahoo-groups bipolar support and interact with people with similar disorder.

you gotta keep the faith...
God is only a prayer away.

Talk to the wife one more time. If anyone can recognize it you can. If she won't listen, then chalk it up to the out of your control section. The wife will find out the hard way if he goes into a state and I bet you will be the first person she calls.

you should mind your own business.
he is an adult, and his doctor and his wife know him better than you do.
and stress and lack of sleep can mimic or worsen symptoms of mania.

stop trying to meddle in his life.

go ahead and give me a thumbs down now. :)
