By all means, DO NOT take the firewall off. If you want to secure your computers from hackers all over the world, then I advise you to keep your firewalls. It is your best protection against intruding hackers everywhere.

Unless you never intend to use the Web, DO NOT disable the firewall, its your protection against anyone trying to get into your PC and wreak havoc.

You can disable it via Control Panel, Firewall Settings, but I would only do it for installing programs whilst I was not connected to the internet.

What do you mean take firewall off? You can usually disable most firewall software installed on your computer.

Disable it via The system Startup (Start>RUN>MSconfig)

disable the services via Adminstator panel

or go inside the program and disable it internally.

depends on the os in xp right click your connection and disable
