No You can have sex a few days before ovulation. Sperm live in the body up to 5 days before they die. If you have sex before ovulation the sperm may still be ready to crack the egg..so to speak.

This was exactly the question of my embryology final test this month. as Gabe R said there is always a risk but I do not agree with him about the period time. In that interval no sexual activities should be done regarding to the poor defensive condition of the uterus walls that it might be even resulting in vagina and / or uterus cancer!!! By the day 14th(might be variable in different races of women) after the start of a woman's period the egg finds it's way out of the ovary into the cords leading it to the body of the uterus . If any combination of the female and male genital cells is to be done it is best to happen in the egg's way to the uterus . That is why the half-time of a woman's monthly habitual reactions is the best time for any intention for having a baby.

No. A woman can become pregnant during any point of her cycle, because the egg could remain in the uterus past the time of ovulation. Even while she's on her period, there is the risk of pregnancy. So wrap your willie!!

Viable sperm can exist in the body for a few days. If ovulation occurs when these are present there is a risk of pregnancy.

that is the whole meaning of ovulation, your egg is traveling at warp speeds to embed itself to your uterus waiting to be impregnated. do you need a donor?
