how can you tell if files were deleted from ipod, because at power-up the apple logo just flashes. It doesn't even fully power up. What can I do to resolve this issue?

Start menu> All Programs> iPod> iPod Updater.
I would try to restore it to factory settings using iPod updater. Songs can be put back later if you have it on automatic update.
Yes, there are a dozen ways to 'hack' the iPod. From uploading a totally different firmware to changing various text throughout the interface. I don't believe it has anything to do with Chinese people. People are always hacking everything; no surprise and nothing to do with this question.

Start with the five Rs at first. The one I would really focus on is recharge and restart (turning the hold switch on then off and then hole down the menu buttons and center button at the same time, if you have a iPod that has a click wheel (gen 3 or newer).

Usualy, that happens on 4g ipods (15, 20Gb ipods)

When this happens, it can mean the battery is not capable anymore of a charge, or that your harddrive has finally died.

Try to leave the ipod conencted to your pc, or to a wall outlet overnight and see if it can charge, if it wont. then its most likley dead. and its time for a new mp3 player

I would start looking into creative mp3 players if you do, their the same price, if not better then apple mp3 players, and offer way much better compaibilty with pc's and not the use of properity software, like itunes.
