If you haven't got an industrial-strength laser ("Why no, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"), a nail will do quite nicely. Hammer it through the hole and then wiggle it around to enlarge the hole. (I find that strangely... arousing.)
If you haven't got a nail, get a Swiss army knife. There's a tool in it that's made for poking holes in leather. Ask the nice man at the Swiss army knife store to show you how it works.

something very sharp. I'd use a knife or even other sharp tools might work as well (stuff from your dad's tool box).

I have had success by using a power drill. Use one of the smaller drill bits and you will be surprised how well this works.

use an ice pick that has a single point then a phillips screw driver to make it bigger if needed
