Depends upon how long it's been since you last used it. MS dumps accounts after about 6 months. The also suspend them after 90 days if memory serves correctly but you can get it back if you log in before it was deleted. However, when it's suspended anything there is deleted and there is no way to get it back.
If the account is deleted and someone else sets up an account with that ID, there's no way to get it back at all.

Old hotmail account - How long haven't you been logging into the account? If it's one year or more, the account might have already been gone. There is no way to retrieve the old emails back in the inbox.
Else you can just login with your old username and password as normal. You will be able to get your emails in it if the account is not abandon for long.

sign in as u normally would ....my mom had her account off for a few months signed in and everything was there!! She just did this today.
