The Synoptic Gospels are very similar in content with various reasons for their differences and are meant for different audiences. On the other hand, John's Gospel stands alone and was "written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name."
John often referred to himself as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." That is to say, Jesus was closest to him. This is especially apparent at the Last Supper at the beginning of the New Covenant Jesus was bringing into being for them and us. Peter had to motion to John to ask Jesus who would betray Him. The inner 3 were John, John's brother James, and Peter.
Personally, I think John's Gospel should've been the first one because it opens - like the Old Testament - with those 3 ominous words: "In the beginning..." and the last of the four should've been Luke because Acts was also written by Luke and the continuation is very natural...

The "synoptic gospels" are the gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke. The consensus among scholars is that Mark was written first, then Matthew and shortly thereafter, Luke, both drawing on the gospel of Mark but including some information of their own. The "gospels" are all four books; the first three plus the book of John. John is not considered to be synoptic because it was written well after the first three and it differs greatly from them in many areas, such as the length of Jesus' ministry.

the gospels are the first four books of the new testiment, matthew mark luke and john. the synoptics are the first three of these whic cover just about the same events, written to diffrent people, with only slight variations, thus all three are a synopsis of the others.
