These are some of the best scary movies I have seen...I could go on.

Silence of the Lambs
Psycho
Jaws (I wouldn't even go in the deep end of our swimming pool after watching that movie...lmao)
The Exorcist
Alien
The Shining
A Nightmare on Elm Street (the first one 1984)
Seven
Jacobs Ladder
Carrie (the original 1976)
The Sixth Sense
The Others

Saw Poltergeist when I was about 11...I wasn't scared of it at all.

The Shinning was a spoof that the Simpson's did. The Shining was scarier than Poltergeist!

The Shinning but I still think these 3 are much scarier than these two.
1) Jaws
2) Alien
3)The Exorcist

Poltergeist was scarier than The Shining. The scariest movie of all time was Evil Dead. But Evil Dead 2 was the stupidest movie ever made.

Several boxes down: Phantasm was fantastic and The Exorcism of Emily Rose stank.

The Shining. Original version. I remember that Poltergeist scared me out of my socks, but I still get chills when I think about how *crazy* Jack was in The Shining. Of course I might be prejudiced because of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Out of these 2 movies, The Shining has to be scarier. I do not think it is as scary as The Exorcist though.

You know, I found both of those films pretty darned scary, but for completely different reasons. "The Shining" was much more of a PSYCHOLOGICAL horror film. Before that family ever got to the hotel, you already knew that they were in bad shape, and that something awful was going to happen to them.

"Poltergeist" had a lot more "shock" moments in it (the clown doll, the tree through the window, the big devil-face coming through the door, etc.)

If i have to pick between these two i would pick The Shining. I also heard that Silent Hill and the Devine were good scary movies, but i haven't seen them yet. My all time favorite "scary" movie would have to be the Halloween series, except the year of the witch.

Poltergeist is scarier. But...
John Carpenter's Halloween, The Thing, and Prince of Darkness are all scarier. Also see Jaws and Alien but avoid the sequels.
