We're so flooded with "gyms" that hardly anyone is making any money; I say start a "personal trainer/nutritionist" business; my friend has had his for about 8 years now and makes about $100,000 after taxes!

Each option has its advantages and disadvantages. If you find out about one for sale, think about the reason(s). Is there no market for the service or were the owners or staff rude and unprofessional. Franchise fees although known in the industry and well-advertised require a great deal of liquid capital. It's not an out of the realm of possible choices but I would probably go from scratch which would give you more freedom to do things your way. Start with a business plan and especially target people (and companies) to do marketing research of the area you want to open in. Unless you are catering to the elderly, you don't want to be in a predominately older neighborhood. Try to put yourself near a health food store or other businesses that can help attract the right people to your establishment.
