We had a football game last night and one of our players had a concussion and i had to take his place in the game. He was taken away in the ambulance which came right to the sidelines to get him. They had to cut his jersey off to get his pads off. He came to the sidelines and he looked terrible. he has had histories of concussions. i saw him today and he said he wont play this friday but maybe in two weeks. i dont know his concussion history but how bad does it sound?

Also is it true if you play hard as you can your chances of getting hurt drop immensly. I played my heart out or went balls to the walls when i was in because it might have been my one chance to play and a lot of people say that if you play hard you wont get hurt. I didnt play hard just to avoid being injured.

concussions are very odd. they can affect people different ways depending on how many they've had. I myself have had 6 and it all depends on the grade of each of them. It sounds like your friend needs to take some time off.

as for playing as hard as you can preventing injuries, not really. A lot of people who play as hard as they can still get hurt.

Repeat concussions can have some serious long term effects for young men. If a patient says they've had a concussion before and I am treating them for one on the scene and his level of consciousness is less than great then he is getting a ride to the Emergency Dept.

Some blows to the head cause extreme bruising and swelling of the brain. Sometimes repeat blows to the head make the brain more vunerable to more extreme reactions to blunt force trauma to the skull. Every hear the phrase "punch drunk" boxer? After repeated blows to the skull the brain sustains more and more minor damage. Over the course of years you end up with Mike Tyson.

Tell the football player to lay off the game until his brain's soft tissue REALLY heals and show no signs of swelling. No headbanging to hard rock music either. Unless he is in the NFL tell him to treat his body better. You're only issued one per lifetime.

sounds like he should lay off for at least alittle while or hes gonna start having more problems with his head then just a concussion if its just a concussion he should be ok in a couple of weeks but personally if i had a history of concussions id take it easy for awhile

If he said two weeks, thats probably how long the doctor told him to chill out for. He'll be fine. Maybe a little more stupid but he'll live

He needs to leave football alone and join the chess club.

I think you'd know better than us, but it sounds pretty bad to me. Hope he gets better and good luck with football!

He could die. He might not die but he could.

It's serious. If he's ok, then he's lucky AGAIN. Don't dismiss it for a common injury.
