I have always just signed the title over (on the back), but it's a good idea to check with your state DMV to see if your state has special requirements like having it notarized.
One thing no one else mentioned: you probably have to report the sale to the DMV--in Oregon it's required within 10 days. Otherwise you can't prove that you sold the car and you can be responsible for accidents, tickets, etc that the other person has in your car. I've done it in a couple states, not sure if every state requires it.
Here is the site for that in Oregon: https://www.oregondmv.com/SSL/SellerNotice/index.htm
It also gives some general info on selling your car that you might find useful.

It depends on the state you are in, try the dept of motor vehicles page for your state. Usually you will have to sign the title in front of a Notary Public who will then witness that it is actually your signature. This costs about a dollar most places. Your bank can do it. After that get your money and give the buyer the title and he will register the car in his name.

Call DMV.
You have the pink slip. Fill out the information. And following the instructions on it.
The best way is to go to the DMV or the AAA to make sure the transaction completes.

You should just sign the title over in front of a notary public to be truly legal.
