be sure to read the labels and follow those directions. the type of material is only one thing to take into consideration to prevent items from shrinking...also water temperature, whether to dry clean or wash/dry, and recommended drying cycle, and the washing cycle.

First you should always read the label on the garment you are going to wash. Some things need to be dry cleaned and you do not want to wash those items at home, they will be ruined. OK, onto the answer...cotton is one fabric that will definitely shrink, silk is another. Any poly, rayon, or other synthetic (man-made) materials do not shrink when put into the dryer. Most natural fibers will shrink so be careful. As a rule when we buy something new that is of natural fibers I hang to dry the first couple of times, then after that I throw into the dryer. Good Luck!!

100% cotton shrinks in the dryer (not the washer) and I usually put those items on a line to dry. I also put delicate things like camis or lacy things on a line. If there's a handwash cycle on your washer, that works very well, but I still put hand washables on a line.

Your garments should have care instructions in the tags. If not, go online and find the answers. There are too many variables to be able to answer you here.
