I was recently prescribed Ortho-tricyclen Lo, to help regulate my irregular cycle, and as per my doctor's instructions, I started the pill pack on the first day of my period.

I have since had a 12-day-long period! This is abnormal, even for me, and I wondered if this is just because my body is getting used to the hormones, or what?

Does anyone know if this is something I should be worried about?

(And please don't answer "call your gynecologist". I'm calling her tomorrow, but right now it's 10:30pm. The doctor's office is not open.)

In a survey, 91% of women who tried ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO liked it and planned to stay on it. You get highly effective protection against pregnancy and shorter, lighter, more predictable periods.
In clinical trials, ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO had a low discontinuation rate (4%) due to adverse events. The most frequent adverse events resulting in discontinuation were headache, cervical dysplasia, emotional lability, nausea and abdominal pain.

ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO has a low incidence of breakthrough bleeding and spotting—an inconvenient and sometimes embarrassing side effect. In a clinical study, fewer than 1 in 5 ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO users reported these potentially embarrassing side effects in their first month on the Pill.

Hormone pills are a funny thing...you never know what they will do to each individual. I had more irregular periods, headaches, and I was sleeping 14 hours a day because of them. I've tried everything and it just doesn't sit right with my body. The point is, I am sure it is just the way they are reacting to your body (i.e - probably producing more eggs as a stimulation from the excess "unnatural" hormones, thus more days to bleed). Your gyno will probably tell you to wait for 3 months into the prescription and see how it is...then possibly find a different prescription to match your body.

Well I would first say all birth control is bad our body's a designed to have a 7 day cycle each month and when we take birth control it causes irregular cycles so yeah it would be normal to bleed for 12 days or sometimes 2 days because of the birth control messing with your natural cycle. My advice to you is to not take it and use condoms because in the long run it Will ruin your health.

I always had a shorter cycle. Perhaps do a web search and go to the website for those pills. Read there the side effects. If this is something serious (after reading the web page you will know) then call the doctor tonight. She should have an answering service.

When I was on ortho, sometimes I wouldn't have a period for 3 - 4 months, and then one that lasted 20 days. Understand that it makes your body think that it's pregnant, but since it really isn't, your period often happens irregularly.

It may continue forever like that - hard to say - your doctor may try changing doses to control it.

When you start any new form of birth control your hormones are going to be a bit out of whack. I have had two periods in a month, no period and other strange things. Twelve days... ick. You have my sympathies! Doubt it is anything to be overly concerned about. If there is fever or pain go to ER of course.

Something isn't right. First Why are you asking strangers. Second Why aren't you asking your Doctor. It could be that is not a strong enough dose. It should stop your period at first and then at the very end give you a normal period.

No that is not normal your period should on last at the longest 7 days....try putting a hot water bottle on your abdominal area and see if that slows down the bleeding....

wow, i just took depo (the shot) for the 1st time and im going thru the same thing. i just had a baby but b4 him, my period was VERY regular. once my body got used to it i bled for 12 dys and then it just stopped. i spot here and there but no real regular period. its normal for your body to react that way when birth control is involved. everyone has a different reaction. i wouldnt worry if i were you.

This will probably only happen this one time. Once your body gets used to the pills, your period should slow down.
