Yes there is a rule that says anyone on the field during the game must be in uniform. If you notice this includes bat boys , base coaches , pitching coaches , hitting coaches etc. etc..........And because umpires are to remain neutral they wear their own plain uniforms. As for other sports , I think the coaches would look silly in football or basketball uniforms.

It's tradition.

In the past, it was much more common for the manager to also be a playing member of the team (Pete Rose was the last player-manager in MLB). For example, the 1933 World Series featured two player-managers: first baseman Bill Terry of the New York Giants, and shortstop Joe Cronin of the Washington Senators.

There is no official rule that requires anyone other than players to wear uniforms. Uniform regulations are covered by section 1.11 of Major League Baseball's Official Rules, and refer only to players, not staff.

When baseball first started out many managers were also players for their teams. So, naturally one of the rules of baseball would be for managers to be in uniform. I think a playing manager would look quite odd in a 3 piece suit diving for a ball at 3rd base or running for second trying to leg out a double.

I've wondered about this myself. Now that I've put some thought into it, I think I might have an answer(strictly only my thoughts)There might be a rule in baseball that states"Any member that appears on the field of play, must wear the proper uniform". You don't see it in football or basketball but the manager doesn't go on the field or the court.

Because there was an old rule that stated that if a team were left with an insufficient number of players due to injury, the managers could fill in for their team.

I'm not so sure I completely buy the above answers about a rule--what about team trainers? They don't ever wear uniforms...

Because they're a part of the club and would look foolish/not proper to be one of the only persons to not wear a uniform.....good question tho
