Hi there
First you should let me know the number for your Chol., LDL and HDL.
The normal range for Chol. is less than 200 and for LDL is less than 100 and for HDL is more than 36.
Anyways, you have to do exercise and watch your diet for a month, then re-check your Lipid Panel again and if the Chol. is still high, you have to start the medication. In my idea, Lipitor or Crestor are really good drugs with a lower side effects.
By the way, how old are you?
I hope my answer helps you.
Take care

first thing, your body produces 75% of the cholesterol it needs, therefore controlling dietary cholesterol is not enough, also intake of sugar, fats and fried foods will increase production of cholesterol by your body. U need to take soluble fibres (psyllium husk) which will bind with bile salt (full of cholesterol) and help eliminate cholesterol from your body.
Exercise will increase your good cholesterol so it is important to know your HDL/LDL ratio - do enquire this about your doctor who may ask you whether your familiy have high cholesterol which may suggest a genetic disorder (familial hypercholesterolemia).
Most important, stress management, stress increases cholesterol production . Stress killing tips at www.relax7.com

If I were in that situation (if I had already consulted a Dr.) I'd control my diet and go to a health food store and buy a supplement and start taking it. I'm not a big fan of prescription medications and I always try natural remedies before I resort to prescriptions. I'm currently going to a chiropractor to control my asthma and my son goes to keep his allergies under control. Believe me...it actually works!

Look for foods that have the "healthy heart" on them. Eat oily fish twice a week like salmon or orange roughy or tuna. Increase fruits and vegetables. Deep colors are most helpful like carrots, beets, blueberries or any berry.
Talk to your doctor to see if you need medication.
Check out the american heart association website. They have many foods listed that are helpful for lowering cholesterol.

Exercise and diet.
I've heard of people using Red Yeast Rice. Another one is adding ground flaxseed to your food. You sprinkle it on your food like pepper.

Then there is always prescription meds.

Exercise, low fat diet and SEE A DOCTOR...get tests. Statin drugs like Zocor will reduce it rapidly and by a large percent, but they are by prescription.
