Well, I think that it is simply to distinguish the men from the women. It also keeps the genders balanced and possibly to promote the cohabitation of men and women. But, this is just my personal opinion.

Maybe if you new something about women in the military and/or law enforcement. Both have to have their hair pinned up neatly and in place. They are allowed to wear makeup, but it has to be natural looking and the jewelry is limited.
For those of you men complaining about women wanting to be equals, I have this to say. Women has evolved over the last 100 years much more than you men have. More times than not, we work outside the home, raise our children, take care of our home, bills, etc., while the majority of you set on your a**** and don't do a thing. You come home from work and think your job is done and can't figure out why the "old lady" isn't in the mood. Quite simply, we are sick of your s*** and have figured out we can live without you and survive on our own while taking care of ourselves and our families. For those of you who truly feel this way about women, you need to go to another country, because the women here are too liberal for your blood and we don't want you here anyway. Go abuse and neglect, beat, and rape a woman that is stupid enough to put up with your crap..........

I'm not sure that this is truly a double standard. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I wouldn't want to be frisked or have my life in the hands of a male law enforcement officer with make up and long hair.

I agree.
The double standard is rampant.
But you are missing the larger sticking point; If the war breaks out -- men will be drafted, but women will not be![1]
Are not women supposed to be "equal to men" and be able to serve the country. Don't they realize that with power comes responsibility?

When I was in the army woman once they have completed all their training were only allowed very moderate make up and or jewelry. My chief of police is a female and she does not wear make up at all. I think that is up to each individual dept. They cannot wear their hair past their neck in either in my accounts.

i work very often with policewomen...none of them wear jewelry or make up when they are in uniforms. also, there are many men with long hair in law enforcement, but men and women have to wear it in a ponytail when they are in uniform. at least in my city, the rules apply to both...and only are for the uniformed officers.
