The rest of the spots would be determined by the three best records. In the nfl, the wild card system is more fair because they actually go to the teams with the lower records, not some 13-3 team that had the misfortune of being second in its division.

The football and baseball wild cards work in exactly the same manner. The division winners are guaranteed entry (3 in baseball, 4 in football), and the wild card(s) are given to the teams with the next best record (1 in baseball, 2 in football). The only difference is the number of teams that make the playoffs (baseball is more selective).

It is very often the case in baseball that the wild card actually has the third or even the second best record in the league, but they will always be at least the fourth best. On the other hand, a division winner doesn't necessarily need one of the four best records in the league. Last year, NL West champion San Diego had the 7th best record in the NL, while Wild Card Houston had the 3rd best record.

NO, it goes to the 2nd place team with the best record. Thats what is meant by winning your division. So the three second place teams are up for the fourth playoff spot,.

ya that would make sum sense. but usually that is the case. the team with the 4th best record usually is the wild card if they're not already the divison leader.
