The tennis ball must lie within the specifications laid down in the Rules of Tennis, while providing consistent playing properties and being sufficiently durable to withstand repeated high-speed impacts with the racket and surface.
There are two types of cloth used in making tennis balls. The two types are Melton cloth, which has high wool content, and Needle cloth, which is cheaper to produce and can have a greater content of synthetic fibres.

The objective of the game is to develop the ability to hit the little ball back well with your bat. At first it may seem a little difficult to handle because it varies a lot with your mouse’s sensitivity, but don’t worry, with just a little practice you can become an expert in this type of game.
It's my favourite game.

Actually, furry balls are not as common as they were in the 70's and 80's. Men's balls, as well as women's cooters, are much more frequently bald now. Often referred to as a "Brazillian", many find that cut to be more comfortable.

It helps to slow the ball down some and give more air controll and less ground controll(spin when it hits the ground). If it did not then everytime the ball his the ground it would go shooting off in a bizaare direction making the games very short and uninteresting(even moreso than they are now).

The flocking on tennis balls take some of the sting out of being hit by one at 100 miles per hour.

I don't know but sounds like you got some very plausible answers. I tried looking for the answer myself and only came up with a lot of technical specs on official size, materials, etc. No good explanation as to why. Good luck finding the right answer.

1. the colored felt helps you see the ball
2. on hard courts it allows for spin to occur ie backspin topspin
3. on clay it allows the ball to bounce properly
