I'm somewhat acquainted with living in a rough area, since I've lived in Baltimore, Maryland, however I'm not sure how Memphis compares to Baltimore. People have said how nice Germantown is, but housing there is too expensive for me. I've also visited apartments around that area and I've come to realize that there are a lot of apartments that appear nice on the outside, but not so great once you move in. Any suggestions??

Also, I'm only going to be staying for less than 6 months..so I don't plan to live in Memphis for very long.

Bartlett, TN (http://www.cityofbartlett.org/) is nice and not as expensive as Germantown.( http://www.ci.germantown.tn.us/) I live in Millington (http://www.ci.millington.tn.us/) (which people call the the country) a city in Shelby County which Memphis is in too. Also there are the cities of Collierville, TN ( just like Germantown)Arlington, TN and Lakeland ( like a mix of Bartlett and Millington ). Check out http://www.memphistn.gov/framework.aspx

Hi Jennifer,,,, I lived in the area called "Mid-Town",, off of Madison Ave,,, it is the (cool place) to live as far as I am concerned,,, I dont know about rent for 6 months,, but there are plenty of apartments in buildings there,, the Hippy Grocery store,, the Memphis Pizza,, down the street,, and lots of resturants to eat,,, all in walking distance... I suggest living in a up stairs apt.. to keep from worrying about break-ins......ok ( just like in any big city) dont go walking at night by yourself .. ok......

I loved it,, it was cultural and check out the Pink Palace,, for a historical - museum thing..... also....

You will like it.. keep in touch if i can help....

good luck

Midtown is the way to go if you want to live in Memphis. Southaven/Horn Lake, MS or over in West Memphis/Marion, AR are good and less expensive.

your use of the words "rough", "safe", and "decent" seem quite suspicious.
