right click on the bottom taskbar and click "Show Desktop"

Either on your desktop or down on the left taskbar you will see something that looks like a blue pad with a pencil pointing to the center of it on a little rectangle. If you click on that it will take you directly to your desktop without closing any windows, just minimizing them on the taskbar. If you mouse over it you will see "show desktop."

if you are using xp goto the bottom of the window right click on the blue part and click show the desktop
