Just because a few hundred astronomers decide Pluto isn't a planet, doesn't make it so.
I've decided I'm an astronomer (i look at the stars all the time) And I've decided I'm worth at least 50 regular astronomers... just because.
"Pluto is a planet. I have declared it!" Okay that's 50 votes in favor. Who else is with me? Declare yourself! Make your 50 votes count! Let's make Pluto a planet again! LOL

No, this stinks. I think Pluto should be a part of our solar system. Maybe we just need to bend the rules a little bit to include more things in our "What is a planet" category. Pluto has been a planet since the 1940's (I think...) and in my opinion should be grandfathered in!
They decided Pluto was not a planet because it's really more like an asteroid than a planet.

No...I'm too used to Pluto being a planet...not Comet Pluto or Asteroid Pluto, or whatever they're downgrading Pluto to. It's the same as upgrading Jupiter to some new astronomical object term, just because it's bigger than the other planets.

I know that they call Jupiter (as well as Saturn, Neptune & Uranus) gas giants. But what if they thought of something else...especially for Jupiter?

They've got the term supernova in astronomy...so if they wanted to upgrade the terminology for planets, they could always just add "superplanet" as a term for Jupiter...and for any planet of the same size discovered outside our solar system.

Nah, Pluto is awesome - it's one of the largest members of the Kuiper Belt, like a mega-comet. Which I think is much cooler than being the puniest planet. And we know so little about those icy objects beyond Neptune - I can't wait till that space craft gets to Pluto and the info comes pouring in!

Who gives astronomers the right to decide what is reality and what isn't? How many years has Pluto been one of our planets? I even know several songs that say "We've got Nine Planets" with Pluto being one of them. I dont' do well with change anyway, but THIS REALLY annoys me. Pluto is our 9th planet and always will be my eyes.

yeah ain't NASA just full of suprises?

not only are they basically downplaying a mission (that if you recall had a lot of protests...) that may in fact be a cover for what others have claimed to possibly be star wars utility, they are also pulling the plug on the 93 year old widow of the discoverer of the PLANET pluto.

seriously- this story is soo wierd.

just another horrible thought of a possible reality.

Pluto has not been written off - it's still there. It has merely been reclassified. Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet. This is not a big deal. Pluto has not been blown up or made to cease to exist.

My boys love to talk about the planets. We decorated their rooms with space in mind etc...My 6 year old knows more about them than I do. We 've started to make a mobile. What do I do with Pluto?I think we"ll hang her up there anyway. If he starts to tell me about the planet Pluto do I correct him? It' crazy.I say long live "Planet Pluto".
