Bit Torrent is a website. It is essentially a search site to locate files you want.

It may be that the file you want isn't all in the same place. Think of it like this: you have 10 people sitting at a table. There are parts of a dictionary there - one of the people has A-K, and another has L-Z. Well, you have a whole dictionary, just not all in the same place.

The Torrent server pulls in the A-K file and the L-Z file, and now has a complete dictionary to send out - and can make copies, so theres a copy for all the people at the table.

Ok. You search Bit Torrent, and find a collection of files, or a 'torrent' you want. You download the torrent, and execute it. It tells the torrent server to get your dictionary from wherever it can find it all over the net.

Also, while your dictionary is downloading, the torrent server is uploading from your copy of the dictionary so it can give a copy to other people. Ergo, a 'torrent' of activity.

Capiche?
