It's just a mannerism. We all have them. Maybe he associates comprehending written words with thinking. So when he striggles a bit when expressing himself verbally, out of subconcious habit, he squints.

You look to the left when you lye and to the right when you are trying to recall something.
I don't know about squinting.

Maybe its really bright outside or something I dont really know. I work nights and when I get off and the suns coming up it looks horribly bright out.

Maybe he thinks it'll make him smarter. Or see what's going on in his head clearer. Help him visualize what he wants to say or something.
He should know by now that it doesn't help though.
