Okay i ask this for the sword before but by accident i closed the question. on that question we thought it was a benonnet. we have another sword on here it might be french so we think that this one might be to t has a few markings on it could they tell us where it came from http://picasaweb.google.com/team6and7/Swords2

It is Austrian and was produced for Civil War use. It is definitely a bayonet and the part showing the marking is known as the Ricasso (unsharpened part of the sword below the grip).

Sorry to burst you boys' bubbles, but that ain't no bayonet! There is no way to attach a sword with a hilt to a rifle barrel. I'd go so far as to say it is a crude Sabre...maybe even a simple short sword. It's difficult to determine as there are no dimensions.

it IS a bayonet - that's why there's the closed loop on the hilt, so that it can be fitted to the barrel of a rifle.
