I am really sorry you lost your Aunt and I admire you for wanting to do something in her memory.
I don't wish to reflect the tone of trolling_for_recs' suggestion but I personally don't think that a roadside cross is a very good idea either. Your Aunt's grave is your personal memorial to her where you can visit and show your love and respect for her memory. How often would you wish to visit the site next to a busy road where she died? Furthermore crosses mark where the dead are buried, and obviously she isn't buried there.
I think if you wish to make a memorial you might want to think about a public bench in a quiet location, with an inscription on it with her name, where people can sit and relax and reflect, and more people will see your aunt's name there than anyone zooming by a roadside marker. I suspect that benches can be expensive compared to a simple cross but you could combine the other suggestions you have here and do some sort of special work just to save money for your aunt's memorial. That would be a more dedicated project and you would always feel you had done something really practical to preserve your aunt's memory. Good luck

Begin by petitioning the State where the fatality accident happened for permission to erect a memorial marker. If it occurred in town or county, contact those authorities first. If it occurred on private land, ask the owner.
Then you could begin with a very simple Latin or Greek Cross made from 2x4s. The Latin Cross is most associated with Christianity. It is the one that has the longer upright shaft. The Greek Cross (also Christian) looks more like a '+' plus sign.
Then you could possibly enlist the aid of a high school shop class for this. Paint or decorate the Cross to your liking and add the appropriate info. Make improvements as you are able to.
So sorry to hear about you aunt.

I'm sorry about your loss. Many people out here use the adopt a highway program. The state puts up a sign that can say " The (your name here) family, In memory of ....." or whatever you think is right. You and your family agree to keep the shoulder tidy a couple of times a month and they maintain the sign. Those that keep the shoulders mowed have a rough time with crosses although they do their best. The crosses get messed up eventually, the signs won't

First let me tell you how sorry I am that you lost your aunt.
I'm sure if you go to a hardware store they would be more then willing to cut you two pieces of wood for a cross and might even help you put it together. Or just ask one of your neigbors to help you.
Ignore the thoughts of not making your memorial. Do as you feel fit to do. This is a free country and I think your idea is a good one.

Are there any craft stores in your area? There is a kind of plastic mesh that is used with yarn to make various shapes and it is a kind of needle work that is easy and quick to do, and you can keep it after in her memory.
You can make a simple wooden one and paint it and write on it.
A cross is a good symbol to put there,, because just as it is a sign of a tragic death,, it also implies the Resurrection promise.

i'm sorry about your aunt.
have you thought about a ojo de dios? it means God's eye. it is two wooden dowels or sticks, tied to form a cross. then you take yarn and wind around one dowel (over-under) and do this round and round. using different color yarns to signify different feelings.
here are better directions

Don't make a stupid memorial - do something in her memory like volunteer to help others or donate some money to a cause she supported. A couple of sticks nailed together mean nothing.
