When you get a cable or DSL Internet service, you get a cable modem/DSL router that will hook into one of the jacks in the house. The Internet service is available from that box only.
If you want to share the connection, you'll have to either have a wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection.
Just because you have a cable TV jack everywhere and phone jack everywhere, that doesn't mean others can use that jack to get Internet service.

I have cable internet with a router on my Apple, and I bought a wireless gaming adapter and am able to play XBox Live from the living room tv. Then, my laptop had a wireless connection, and I can just pick up the connection from anywhere in the house. Usually you can have two or three more computers hooked up to the same connection with no additional fee. Talk to your internet company.

If you have your own separate phone line, you can get DSL in only your room of the house. I am not sure about cable, but if you can somehow get your own cable service and cable box for your room you could get cable broadband.
But it's the same price regardless, so why not share it and have them pay part of it?
