I don't see it that way, even though some would like me to believe it...I don't see hatred between people of different ideologies in the US...at least not the majority...how about you?

Unfortunately I have seen it. The media (right and left) have been stoking this fire and conditioning hatred among us for the other side. It's really bizarre. Before Reagan we could be Democrats and Republicans. Since Reagan, we are demonized as either conservatives or liberals. It's crazy. Americans have always been about moderation, but the extremists on both sides have taken control and are sailing both ships over the falls.

United we stand divided we fall. I believe we are split on various issues and beliefs, but in the end I would say most people come together and try to do whats best for America. Sometimes just taking care of yourself is the best thing for the country. I have made it a point, when I don't agree with someone I try to keep my mouth shut. I guess I am somewhat of a passifist though. I do think however division in the government led to 9/11, and the presidents handling of the middle east.

I definately do!

I attended a rally and speech by Nixon in 1969 and I was carrying a peace sign and Nixon supports get very uppity with me.

I didn't have an ANTI NIXON SIGN, I had a peace sign. I wanted Nixon to Know I was for PEACE.

But Nixon supports practically beat me up for that!

I don't think anything has changed today!

Pat Roberson says God is not only punishing Gay people, but any country that tolerates them!

The KKK once said that about black people!

I think the country is getting tired of soldiers dying in Iraq.

I think George Bush WILL have to solve that problem in another 18 months or possibly face the Republicans losing heavily to the Democrats.

Then the Republicans can say WE BROUGHT THE BOYS HOME AND WON

Like Nixon.

Peace with honor!

What for it to happen. Watch for Bush to start a pull out within 18 months of today.

I think Hispanics are getting very uppitty and I expect them to DEMAND this country go bi-lingual officially, like Canada is, with EVERYTHING in print requried to be in both English and Spanish.

By law.

Hispanics now out number blacks and will be 35% of this country in another 20 years.

Gay rights will become a major issue in the next 20 years and there will be bloodshed at rallies.

I will be interesting to see how the poltical bedfellows will be drawn.

Will gay, women, hispanics and black collaborate, if so they will out number WASPs by 2020.

We'll get Gay Rights, Women's Rights, Black rights and Hispanic rights in one package and it will be fought in the streets and in Washington.

This country has ALWAYS been divided and we manage to do business as usually. Go figure that out!

I saw the votes for the current Constitution and many states voted it in by only a 53% margin. That means 47% wanted Confederation to continue.

Unfortunately there is a divide in tis country between the left and the right. This divide can be breached at times (think sept. 11th) but soon thereafter quickly reasserts itself as status quo. Both sides are vehement in that they think they are right. As a former liberal turned conservative I divide the country into 2 groups. The liberals believe that we can make a better world by wishing it was so. Can't we all just get along? The conservatives want a better world as well but try to deal with the realities of the world as it is, not how they wish it should be. I have compassion for the liberals because they are doomed to lives of frustration and disappointment.

I think the majority of people have a middle of the road balanced attitude. I do think that it's the extremes that sell books and get talk shows. I think most people when confronted with facts are able to sort out propaganda from fact. I do believe there is an extreme polarization between the extremes and the "with us or against us" attitude from Washington DC hasn't helped that. I think the fact Joe Lieberman is running on an independent ticket points to division within parties. I think most people want to help Iraq but they want a time line for disengagement or review. I think the only people saying "cut and run" or those who want to carpet bomb Iraq into oblivion and be done with it. I've noticed a trend of putting words in the mouth of those one faction opposes calling them traitors or cowards. Most of the extremism comes from one party crediting the other with some outlandish extreme.

Yes, this country has definitely been divided in recent years. Professional political consultants have made hot button issues a wedge between huge segments of citizens. What used to be topics of argument and discussion are now the single issue which drives many people in deciding a party or candidate. This ranges from immigration to abortion, "patriotism" to "morality." Parties don't have to actually support an emotional position, they just have to say they do. People are too lazy to find out actual intentions and historical patterns and are willing to overlook cronyism and corruption for politicians who are willling to run a favorite issue up the flagpole at election times and bring it out a couple of time in between to beat up an opponent or detractor.

Red vs Blue
liberal vs conservative
protestant vs muslim
gay vs straight
democrat vs republican
choice vs restriction
immigration vs illegal immigration

Too many people don't view others as fellow Americans with varying viewpoints and beliefs. It's turn into an elitist "for or against" club choice. "You don't believe like I do, then you don't count and discussion/debate is irrelevant." People aren't personal any more, hiding behind gated communities and anonymous online nicknames. Just go to a town hall meeting and see what I mean about lack of real participation. Check out what percentage of people attend community events or volunteer. How many people vote?

Yeah, it's too easy to let the media and soundbite pundits shape your judgments. It's a lot easier to use silo thinking than interact with others, compromise, and live in peace.

Yes, we are really, very divided. Gay people can't use the word "homophobic" to describe everyone who doesn't support equal rights for gays and say that kind of thing "nicely" as if we are all getting along with one another. Pro-choice people cannot say "Keep your laws off my body! Unless you have a vagina you can't tell me what to do with mine!" and be "nice" about it. These are hard, unmoving, uncompromising people who don't want to participate in the give-and-take of politics. These are people who have to have things their way.

Oh, and, in the interest of fairness, there are also soooooo many right-wing people who still think that there was nothing at all wrong with the Supreme Court's ruling in Bush v. Gore. Again, these are people who just can't compromise.

I don't live in your country, but from everything i have seen or heard, the major division is between north and south, same as where i am from. and why is it that with an election some of your states are worth more points than others. are you saying the people from those states are more important? i don't get it

I agree with you. I don't see America as divided. It seems like the Lefties are trying to portray our country that way to get elected. I think people still want our borders defended no matter the cost. All the lefties have done for 6 years of Bliss under Bush is complain about EVERYTHING, but have no ideas of their own. Therefore, they need to "divide" the country.

The extremists hate the people of the opposing party. The extremist liberals think all republicans are fundamentalist rednecks and the extremist republicans think liberals are elitist and godless.
