This looks weird to do, but it is the cure my family has used all my life and it never fails me.

Pour yourself a glass of water. Now, drink it ,but from the OPPOSITE side of the glass. Drink it all down, which will require you to bend over further and further as you drink, until your head is almost upside down. When you stand up, your hiccups should be gone.

Despite everything you have heard, there is no home remedy for hiccups. Unless you include a fifth of Jack Daniels. Hiccups are caused by a spasm of the diaphragm in your chest. The only known cure is heavy sedation, but that is reserved for those who have suffered for several days. In most cases they go away in just a few minutes, but be prepared for as much as an hour. Gargling won't hurt. In fact, anything that includes relaxing will help.

There are actually quite a few ways to get rid of the hiccups, ranging from drinking something to getting somebody to scare you. Unfortunately, what works for some, may not work for others. This is partially due to the fact that hiccups have a variety of causes, ranging from eating hot food with a cold drink, to a possible side effect of chemotherapy. (30% of chemotherapy patients have this side effect). Remedies can, therefore, range from changing breathing patterns, to eating something, to distracting your mind, to (in rare cases) medical aid. Hiccups is a spasmodic reflex of the diaphragm. This muscle helps you to breath. When you hiccup, you are gulping in air, so anything that will change the rhythm of your breathing will help. Scaring you causes you to gasp in air. Drinking water makes you hold your breath. Hold your breath for a few ten counts. Different things work for different people. All you are doing is trying to counteract the spasms. Sometimes all you can do is just relax and breath slowly.

I consciously regulate my breathing so that it's slow and steady. -- Breathe in....Breathe out-- This helps, since hiccups are diaphram spasms.
