Several years ago, I slipped climbing out of the pool and hit my shin against a metal ladder. It hurt immediately and a substantially-sized bruise appeared, along with localized swelling. A month or more later, almost all the pain was gone and the bruise had disappeared, but the swelling still presisted. I didn't know as much medical knowledge then as I do now, and now I'm wondering, did I have a bone bruise?

The shins are one of the most sensitive areas of the leg, which is why when in a fight your instructor tells you to go for the shins. You may have just bruised the muscle or ligiments with out realizing it, and this can take quite some time to heal, the longest I have seen is 8 months. If it continues to bother you an x-ray would not be paraniod, but simply a percaution just in case you did happen to get a hair line fracture from your fall. That would depend on the force and angle you hit the ladder when you slipped. It takes about 8 pounds of pressure to cause one, so pleasse be careful.

Sounds like a severe contusion to the soft tissue of your shin. Even if you sustained a fracture (or break) At this point it still is in the healing process. Bones take 6-8 weeks to heal. You may even have bruised the bone. Unless you are experiencing pain and discomfort with ambulation (walking) an xray really wouldn't be necessary. Try heat to the area 20 minutes every hour when you can and elevation. Get better soon.

Shin bruses take a long time to heal. You probably did bruse the tissue near the bone, which would explain the swelling! I hit my shin when I fell down some stairs and it took months to feel better!

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.shinsplintscure.org ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!
