Adam was first & God made Eve from one of Adams ribs, they were NOT brother & sister.
They were created by God so they could populate the earth.

If Eve was created from Adam's rib (to respond to one of the other answers as well as to your question), then she wasn't Adam's sister, she was his almost-clone. Pretty much the person Adam would have been if he'd been female. One would think that God created both of them without any "bad" recessive genes, so that their genes combining -- and those having little or no difference but the gender-based ones -- would not produce undesirable traits... Incest causes problems genetically because the parents have such similar genes and the recessives that they both have combine and express in the children.

Remember those Punnet squares you had to do in biology class? If there are no recessive genes and both parents have the same gene for something, the offspring will (baring sports or mutations) have the same traits as both parents. So, no deformities until mutations started making their way into the gene pool. And chances are, by the same arguments, that Cain, Able, and Seth (and all the other sons they had) would have looked like twins except for their different ages.

I'm not saying I believe this. There's a lot of assumptions necessary even to consider the question, much less formulate the answer. But, if one assumes that the Bible, in its current form, is factually true, and if one assumes that God created Adam and Eve without "flaws" in their genetic code, then this is likely how things went.

Adam and Eve were the first inhabitants of this earth and our original parents. Many sons were born of them, and while the Bible doesn't mention the fact, so too were many daughters.

Marriages of brothers and sisters, uncles and nieces, and other variable forms were in no way considered incest as we think of it today. That was the only way for mankind to fill the earth and God knew it--and sanctioned it.

The strains of incest didn't surface until centuries later, and today, of course. Marriages of brothers and sisters were common in the Egyptian dynasties to keep the royalty within the families.

Customs change through time and so has the thought of incest. A little over 150 years ago it was common for young teens to marry and begin their families. Today we'd look upon such a practice as intolerable. Time changes cultures, customs, and practices. Move beyond what was done and concentrate on what is to be.

Yes there was Incest. God made Adam. Then he made Eve from Adams Rib. So they were not Brother and sister. However the Bible says Adam and Eve had only Boys for Children. Therefore in order for the Earth to be more populated Eve had to Mate with her own Children.

Incest only casuses deformities if there are undesirable mutations in the genetic code. Remove the mutations, and you have no reason to forbid incest or at least that's the theory.

Genesis 1:26 New Century Version
Then God said,"Let us make human beings in our image and likeness...
Genesis 1:27 NCV
So God created human beings in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created male and female.
Gen 1:28 God blessed them and said,"Have many children and grow in number.
Gen 2:7 Then the Lord took dust from the ground and formed a man from it.
Gen 2:8 Then the Lord God planted a garden in the east, in a place called Eden, and put the man he formed into it.
Gen 2:18 Then the Lord God said,"It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him.
Gen 2:22 The Lord God used the rib from the man to make a woman, and then he brought the woman to the man.
From what I gather God created male and females in our image and likeness to have many children and populate the earth. Then after the seventh day of rest the Lord formed man from dust and later woman, from man's rib and set them in a garden in the east where God provided them with everything including what fruit to eat and not eat of the garden of Eden.
Once they fell prey to the snake/serpent the Lord threw them out of the garden into the world where they would have to labor for their food, clothing and shelter. Adam&Eve were formed from dust and bone. They chose to eat of the tree of Good&Evil and the Lord threw them out to live amongst the earlier people who were created in God's image male and female.

It is perfectly possible to be a devout christian and not take every word in a collection of myths and fables as divine. Learn more about what you're reading before you try to analyze it.

In the beginning, men were sons of God & women were sons of man, so they were not related & could marry whoever. At least that's the way they explained it to us in Sunday School back in the 60's.

the bible is just a metaphor. if everyone truly sprung from the same 2 people we'd all have massive deformities (<--notice proper spelling) and birth defects.
