Free. Hmm, you want "free" and think you can teach yourself. Well, good luck to you then. You're joining the blind leading the blind. When you're totally frustrated, call a good teacher like myself. Then he can try to unravel all the things you've done wrong, and you can take 7 times longer to learn it right, as does everyone who tries to learn "free."
Or! You could call a good teacher NOW and disabuse yourself of the notion that free is good.

Hi Alex,, ( love the name)...... look what you probably should do,, is go to your local music store and pick up a copy of guitar chords..... they will show you where to put your fingers on what strings....
Then,,,,,, you also need to find someone,, a friend or minister of music at your church,, someone that will help guide you along while you are just beginning....
It took me a while to learn , but I have never regretted it,,, sore fingers and all.....lol they go away....and you will get pad on them...
good luck and have fun learning.....

the best way I think to learn is to start at about.com and look up guitars.then learn how to play tabs.after that go to Wikopedia.com and look up the names of the notes so you can practice learning to read chords.after that all you gotta do is keep learning songs and perfect it.And be patient VERY PATIENT!
