Disclaimer : below is purely personal opinion based on personal experience only.
Climate :
Sydney --> Mild 4 seasons
Brisbane --> Temperate climate, winter 9 to 22, summer, (20 to 35), mid-season is hardly noticeable.
People:
Sydney --> Unfriendly, stuck-up, unless you know them better.
Brisbane --> Used to be friendlier, but now getting more and more unfriendly.
In both cities, laid back should nto be applied indiscriminately. Some are, some aren't.
Jobs:
Sydney --> More people, more jobs
Brisbane --> Growing city, more and more jobs are becoming available, but still limited compared to Sydney.
Entertainment:
Sydney --> Huge entertainment, but you have to pay the price.
Brisbane --> Smaller, but good quality entertainment. Shops, cafes, pubs are everywhere.
Cost of living:
Sydney --> EXPENSIVE! EXPENSIVE!
Brisbane --> EXPENSIVE!
Just to give you an idea in Brisbane:
Average meal (without drink) at food course : 6 to 9 dollars
A bottle of coke : 2.50
Laundry : 3 dollars per wash, 1 dollar for 10 or 15 minutes dryer.
Transportation : 2.50 to 4 dollars one way
Gasoline : 1.30 to 1.40 per litre
Rent : at least 200 for reasonable 2 bedroom apartment
Movie : 12 or more

Brisbane or anyware in Queensland for that matter. We have the best of everything free hospitals which southerners take full advantage off. Great beaches great climate the reason people from Sydney&Melbourne retire here. The only time Queenslanders go down south is when we have too.

I have visited Australia and travelled Sydney, Canberra, the Gold Coast and Brisbane. I think if I were to live in Australia, I'll choose Sydney. People are laid back generally even in Sydney. You also get the frills a big city. The beaches are minutes away from the city. You have a perfect concert hall by the harbor. The New Year fireworks display is a blast by the bridge. The cost of living is higher compared to other cities in Australia but is much lower if you compare it to US cities or major European cities. In short, you can enjoy your life in Sydney far better than others.

Brisbane is not as fast paced as Sydney and the cost of living is less.
Having said that, the rates of pay are less too, but given a choice, I'd pick Brisbane.
Job availablity is good in both cities, depending on your skills.
Brisbane is more tropical/warmer than Sydney and that's why I'd go for it. Sunshine cheers me up!

I lived in Sydney till I was 30 then moved north to Brisbane.
I will say Brisbane as it has less people then Sydney and the people are more friendlier.
Your not watching your back every second like you do in Sydney.

Depends on what you want out of where you live.
If it is pollution, congested traffic, awful roads, super high cost of living, unaffordable rent, scattered nightlife, disgustingly long travel times, lots of tolls, rude people, uncomfortable weather, racial violence and general mistrust and feeling of not being safe... well, Sydney is a great place to start.
I'd pick Brissie any day. I was born in Sydney and lived there for a number of years and wouldn't go back. The wages might be higher in Sydney but they have to be considering the cost of living.
Brisbane is far cleaner, warmer, laid back and you dont have to spend hours just travelling from one part of the city to another. Makes a huge difference when you want to club hop too!
Go BrisVagas!
