Put it in the washer with some baking soda. Baking soda is about $0.50 and it neutralizes all strong odors.
If you don't want to wash it, spray the bag with some Lysol (or the Febreeze again) and leave it open, outside, for a day or so.
After you do either of those, put a single fabric softener sheet in one of the pockets. The bag will take on that scent very quickly.

I would wash your backpack like normal laundry but add a little oxiclean and a little of the spray and wash stain remover. Put the oxiclean and the spray and wash in the water along with your detergent and fabric softner. My boyfriend works in the kitchen and thats how I remove the grease and smell from his clothes. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Keep a box of "Arm and hammer" baking powder in there for a week, partially open. It's supposed to eat odors, and it certainly doesn't smell bad.
You could also try some of that powder carpet deodorizer.

Things like chacoal, teabags can also help absorb smells, if not, open it out and air it. The best solution is still to wash it and dry it with the inside turned out.

Spray it with Fabreeze then fill it with clean newspaper overnight.
Also you can sprinkle baking soda, not powder, inside and leave overnight. Then shake it out.

orange peelings and charcoal are best in getting rid of odors coz they absorb (best for fridge) it but in your case, you may opt for orange peeling, t will absorb the odor and it smells good also, no fuss for you
