We just learned this in 6th grade last year. It was Penelope, she did it because she was waiting for her husband Odysseus to come home from his long journey, and she had suitors that wanted to marry her, and they all said Odysseus was dead, but she knew he wasn't, so she said that when she finished her tapestry, she'd marry one of them... but she knew Odysseus was alive so every night she unraveled the tapestry, and after years, the guys eventually found out.

Odysseu's wife, Penelope was weaving a tapestry, and she had promised to marry one of her many arrogant suitors once the tapestry was finished. She didnt want to marry anyone, as she still loved Odysseus, so would unravel her work every night. At least, I think it was a tapestry.... it might have been a shawl.

Chicken-egg question. You're assuming the Greek and Egyptian stuff is older, and in some cases it might be the other way around. Truth is, the Persians, Egyptians, Romans, Graeco-Syrians, Etruscans, Phoenicians, Chaldeans and Hebrews all influenced each other. Besides that, if you look, you will find the same similarities in Nordic, Celtic, numerous Native American and Chinese myths -- will you assume deliberate copying there, too? There are certain universals in human psychology, that is all; they come up everywhere. Look up the work of Carl Jung. You are on the right track -- but there is no reason to assume deliberate copying; the influence of one culture on another accounts for it without that.

The women was Penelope, who was the wife of Odysseus. After the war at Troy that Odysseus went to [which took ten years], it took him another ten years to come home. During that time, suitors would come to the palace where Penelope lived and try to get her to marry one of them, but she would make up excuses. The tapestry was one of them, since she would tell them "I shall choose one of you once I finish this tapestry", but at night she would unravel the tapestry and thus keep the suitors waiting.

It is Penelope and she was waiting for Odysseus to come home from the Trojan war. The men of his kingdom thought he was dead and had insisted Penelope pick one of them for her new husband. She said she would when she finished the tapestry, so she unraveled it every evening.

It was Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, who was gone so long during the Trojan War that everyone was saying he was dead and she should take a husband. To keep these unwanted suitors at bay she told them she would marry one of them when she finished weaving the tapestry but she made sure she never finished. Luckily her husband finally showed.

Penelope was her name and she did it to waste time until her husband returned from the Trojan war. Alot of men in the town where she lived (Ithaca) wanted to marry her, so she started weaving a tappestry and said that when she finishes it, she will pick one of the men to marry. Meanwhile in the evening she would unravel all the day's work and start again in the morning. She did this until her hubby got home

O yea i nkow this one. The deal was when she finished the tapestry she would take a man's hand in marrage. She believed her husband to still be alive after 15+ years, so to ahve to keep from remarring she would undo the weave alittle every night.

I know she was doing it because she was waiting for her husband to get home because she said something about how when she finished what she was making she would marry and she didn't want to marry...therefore she kept undoing it and then redoing it...it might be Penelope.
