I am having my first garage sale soon. What kind of money should I have for the sale, mostly change or bills, and how much? Any other tips would be appreciated. I really could not find an appropriate category, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong one.

Have lots of change available (but keep your eye on it, maybe put it in a coffee can or something and not in plain sight). Have bags and tissue paper available for wrapping breakables and to put peoples' purchases into.

Make clear signs (some cities require permits for garage sales, but lots of times don't send anybody around to actually see if you have one) leading people to your sale. Can even advertise in the newspaper. Don't open early. There will be people waiting outside to go through the "best" stuff and they are usually dealers who want to resell what they buy.

Organize by category: toys and children's items; womens' clothes; mens' things; tools; books, etc. Have everything in good shape. Don't try to sell broken or dirty things.

Be flexible on prices of inexpensive things but hold firm on something that you value or is really good quality. Sometimes you can put a bunch of little things in a box and mark it so-much for the entire box.

Play some nice music on the radio to get people in a relaxed mood...nothing really loud or objectionable.

get 20 $1 bills, 4 $5 bills... quarters... It really depends on how expensive your stuff is. If you have a lot of 50cent items... you need more change.

put a flourecent colored sign on the most major road near you and then signs which actually guide a person to your home, don't miss a turn, I can't tell you how many sales I've been like, "oh well, can't find it, thats lame..."

start early... professional garage sale enthusiests get goin' at 7:00, no lie... all the good stuffs gone at 8

most people who go to garage sales don't carry a lot of money, they usually have small bill or change so they can get your stuff cheaper.
set as much of your stuff on tables, these you can make by setting boards on boxes, it is easier if you price everything, put signs with you address on light poles on the busiest road close to you, and put an add it the local paper, with the dates of your sale. you will only need about $30.00 in small bills and change, a roll of quarters should do. be sure to take the signs down ofter your sale.

Just get some change about 10.00 in coins and enough money I would say to change a 20 dollar bill, and sit there oh remember you cant legally go up on a price only down so start out kinda high then go down. ask about oh say...1/3 of what you paid. not sure about the one third part but the other is accurate, oh try not to get mad if people don't like your stuff, that's what I did and I ended up with a huge dump load, lol
